The Art of Death in the City of Light | SHEPPY DOG FUND LECTURE

Some of the most unusual and creative artistic expressions in Paris are not to be found in its museums, churches, or grand buildings, but instead reside in its cemeteries. Three of its best-known cemeteries—Père Lachaise, Montmartre, and Montparnasse—attract millions of visitors each year, some to pay their respects, while most go to have an unconventional aesthetic experience. This talk will explore the role art plays in beautifying a place of the dead by looking at Père Lachaise Cemetery and the Catacombs. We will contemplate what these places meant in post-Revolutionary France, as well as how we see them through a contemporary lens.

Tracee J. Glab has been Executive Director of the Flint Institute of Arts since 2022. In her previous role as Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, she oversaw more than 100 exhibitions. Glab is the author of Director’s Choice (Scala, 2023) and has managed eighteen publications. This will be Glab’s fourth Sheppy Dog Fund lecture, previously covering such diverse subjects as ancient mosaics in Israel, death symbolism in art, and most recently, crimes of passion in art theft. Glab earned her MA in art history from Wayne State University and BA in art history from University of Michigan-Dearborn.
